In a progressive move, the Assam government has announced that single fathers employed in state government departments will now be eligible for child care leave (CCL). Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared the decision on social media, emphasizing the state's commitment to supporting employees who are sole caregivers for their children.
Previously available only to female employees, the updated CCL policy now includes male government employees who are widowers, divorcees, or unmarried fathers. The leave can be availed for up to two years (730 days) for children under 18 years of age, including biological, adopted, or legally dependent children. Employees with custody of disabled children are also covered under the revised rules.
This initiative aims to provide single fathers with the flexibility to care for their children without compromising their professional responsibilities, reflecting the government's dedication to fostering an inclusive and supportive work environment.
