Delhi-NCR was lashed by heavy rains, hail, and a massive dust storm on Wednesday evening, causing chaos in flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport. IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet have all sent out emergency notifications with scores of domestic and international flights delayed, diverted, and at least one cancelled.
Flights to major destinations like London, Paris, Frankfurt, Singapore, Toronto, and Bangkok have been delayed, while a flight to Tel Aviv was cancelled. Airlines have requested passengers to check the status of flights on the web prior to arriving at the airport and to depart earlier than normal for travel as waterlogging and poor visibility have also affected road traffic.
IndiGo also reported disruption not only in Delhi, but Chandigarh and Kolkata as well, and detailed that one Delhi-Srinagar flight landed safely after it was hit by a hailstorm halfway through the flight. The India Meteorological Department has forecasted continued thunderstorms and winds of up to 70 kmph in Delhi, with more heavy rain forecasted for the region.
Passengers are advised to keep themselves updated with their airline and plan accordingly as weather is unpredictable.
