Bengaluru is reeling under a relentless downpour that has left much of the city submerged, disrupting daily life and public transport. On Tuesday, heavy rains flooded major roads, tech parks, and residential areas, with dramatic visuals surfacing of rainwater gushing into a moving BMTC bus-turning commutes into a watery ordeal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert, forecasting more heavy rain and gusty winds for the next 48 hours.
Key Highlights:
Widespread Flooding: The city’s tech corridors, including Manyata Tech Park, and several residential neighborhoods faced knee-deep water. Over 150 houses were inundated, and arterial roads near the airport and central business district were submerged, causing massive traffic snarls.
Transport Chaos: BMTC was forced to suspend over 300 bus routes as waterlogged streets became impassable. Commuters were seen wading through flooded roads, and tractors were deployed for rescue operations in the worst-hit areas. Electric buses were diverted from flooded routes after a recent fire incident linked to waterlogging.
Civic Response: The BBMP control room received a flood of complaints-over 120 about fallen branches and dozens about uprooted trees. Emergency teams worked round the clock to clear debris and restore mobility, resolving most cases by evening.
Weather Warning: The IMD warns of continued heavy rain and winds up to 50 kmph through Thursday. Residents are urged to stay indoors, avoid waterlogged areas, and report emergencies promptly.
With more rain on the horizon, Bengaluru’s resilience is being tested as authorities scramble to keep the city moving.
