GMDC has accelerated development of its 15 MTPA Baitarni-West coal mine in Odisha by appointing a mining partner and securing Stage-I Forest and Environmental clearances from MoEF&CC. The flagship coal asset deepens GMDC’s diversification beyond lignite, supports Atmanirbhar Bharat energy goals, and strengthens its long-term, future-ready mining portfolio.
Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd (GMDC) has moved a step closer to operationalising its flagship Baitarni-West coal mine in Odisha by appointing a mining partner and securing crucial statutory clearances, reinforcing its coal foray alongside its lignite leadership. The 15 MTPA opencast project is positioned as one of GMDC’s most value-accretive assets, aligned with the Atmanirbhar Bharat agenda and India’s energy security goals. The company has now obtained Stage-I Forest Clearance and Environmental Clearance for the mine from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), enabling structured project advancement and phased production planning.
GMDC has acquired three coal blocks in Odisha, with Baitarni-West in Angul district emerging as the largest and strategically most significant, backed by over 1,000 MMT of geological reserves and a planned peak capacity of 15 MTPA. The work award to a dedicated mining partner, finalised at GMDC’s Ahmedabad corporate office, sharpens execution visibility and supports disciplined ramp-up in line with regulatory timelines and responsible mining norms.
