In a big move to increase India's border security, the Border Security Force (BSF) will soon receive 16 new battalions-around 17,000 men-and two new field headquarters along the Pakistan and Bangladesh borders. The upgrading, for which in-principle government approval has been received, comes amidst heightened security concerns following recent events along both borders, including the Pahalgam massacre and political events in Bangladesh. One of the new HQs will be based in Jammu for heightened vigil along the India-Pakistan border, and the other will be created in Mizoram for better surveillance of the Bangladesh border. Recruitment and training of the new units will begin soon, with rollout expected within the next five to six years. The BSF is guarding 6,726 km along both borders at present, and the enhancement is aimed at countering new security threats and unfenced patches. Source: Economic Times
