Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Saturday assured agitating students of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, safety, their course of study, and well-being, after days of protests demanding the removal of the institute's Director, Dean, and Sub-Dean on charges of abusive behavior.
A student delegation which had been boycotting classes and organizing protests since May 7 met the Governor, Shri Bhalla, at Raj Bhavan and handed over a memorandum listing their grievances. The Governor listened to the students patiently, heard their grievances, and assured them that their safety and educational interests would not be permitted to be compromised. He promised them that the grievances raised would be properly scrutinized with concerned authorities in consultation.
Petitioning for peace, Governor Bhalla called for the students to continue being devoted to their education and keep the campus calm, again assuring that proper steps would be undertaken in accordance with due process.
The protests were sparked by claims that the RIMS Director used abusive and threatening remarks when he met with students recently. The RIMS administration, therefore, explained that disciplinary action had been taken against some students following the act of skipping classes to go for a picnic on a working day despite previous warnings.
RIMS, Lamphelpat, Imphal is an autonomous institution within the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and attracts students from all the northeastern states as well as from the rest of the country.
