The Delhi government has announced plans to set up additional biomedical waste treatment plants to ease the burden on the city’s two existing facilities. The new Common Biomedical Waste Treatment Facilities (CBWTFs) will boost processing capacity, improve district-level coverage, and strengthen environmental infrastructure across the capital.
Delhi currently relies on two biomedical waste treatment plants to handle the city’s growing medical waste load. With rising healthcare activity and increasing demand for safe disposal, these facilities are under significant pressure. To address this, the government has decided to establish new CBWTFs across the capital.
Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa confirmed that tenders will be floated soon, with each proposed facility designed to handle up to 46 tonnes per day. The initiative will not only expand processing capacity but also ensure district-level coverage, reducing transportation challenges and improving efficiency.
Officials from the National Productivity Council, the Environment Department, and the Delhi Pollution Control Committee are working together to finalize the number of plants and their locations. This move is part of Delhi’s broader push to strengthen green infrastructure and ensure responsible biomedical waste management.
