Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) has launched a renovation project to revive the city's old canals to breathe new life into urban transportation and tourism. The ₹3,716.10 crore Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System, approved by the Kerala state government, is set to give a major facelift to six large canals-Perandoor, Chilavannur, Edappally, Thevara, Konthuruthy, and Market Canal.
The project will involve expansion of these canals, deepening them to at least 16.5 metres, and landscaping with grass and walkways on both sides. KMRL will launch boat services on the Edappally and Chilavannur canals, with a fleet of 10 new boats running every 30 minutes on an 11.5-kilometre route from Muttar to Chitrapuzha. Increased intermodal connectivity is also planned, connecting the Vyttila–Thevara Water Metro line with the Elamkulam Metro Station through the upgraded Chilavannur Canal.
A new seafront, inspired by Marine Drive, will be built along the Chilavannur Canal, with landscaped promenades and water sporting facilities, providing a new recreational paradise for tourists and locals alike.
For solving urban problems, the project entails the building of new bridges to enhance the water flow and avoid floods and the installation of four sewage plants at Elamkulam, Vennala, Perandoor, and Muttar.
KMRL Managing Director Loknath Behera also added, "This project will not only address monsoon flooding and Kochi's long-standing waste management issue but also introduce water transport, walkways, and water sports facilities to our heritage canals. This space will be a new entertainment hub in no time, encouraging wellness and lifestyle among citizens."
