During a high-profile visit to Spain, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, leading an all-party Indian delegation, was asked a pointed question by the Indian diaspora: “What is the national language of India?” Her response—“The national language of India is unity and diversity. That is the message this delegation brings to the world, and that is the most important thing today”—drew thunderous applause and quickly went viral.

Kanimozhi’s statement came against the backdrop of ongoing debates in India over the three-language formula in the National Education Policy 2020, a policy her party has vocally opposed. The DMK continues to advocate for linguistic pluralism and federal rights, emphasizing the significance of both Tamil and English in Tamil Nadu.

The all-party delegation, which included leaders from the Samajwadi Party, BJP, RJD, AAP, and former diplomats, was in Spain as part of a five-nation outreach. Their mission: to rally international support for India’s zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and to highlight India’s resilience following recent security challenges.

In Madrid, Kanimozhi’s inclusive message not only underscored India’s pluralistic identity but also resonated with Indians abroad, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to peace, unity, and diversity. The delegation also met with Spain’s Foreign Minister and the Association of Victims of Terrorism, further strengthening diplomatic ties and sharing India’s experience in combating extremism.
