Road Warriors: Bengaluru Teens Code a Smoother Ride at Social Hackathon 2025

A group of Grade IX pupils from National Public School, Bengaluru, has hogged the limelight with the creation of a smart pothole detection system at the renowned Social Hackathon 2025 organized by CMR Institute of Technology (CMRIT). The competition, which gathered budding minds from all over India, centered on using technology to solve real-time social problems.
Event Overview
Social Hackathon 2025 was a national-level, 24-hour offline event that took place at CMRIT, Bengaluru.
95 teams out of 480 registered teams from all over India were selected for the finals, with 23 hardware and 72 software projects.
Delegates came from prominent institutions like CMR University, NPS, SRM Chennai, NIT Raipur, VIT, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Anna University, BML Munjal University, Mohan Babu University, and RVCE.
Important Highlights of the Pothole Detection Project
The intelligent pothole detection system was created by Grades 9 and 10 students, Joshith Talakoti and Dhruv Ranjan, of National Public School, Bengaluru.
The project intends to enhance road safety through real-time pothole identification with the potential to save lives and assist city planners in maintaining urban infrastructure.
The students added, "We hope to employ this software to save millions of lives on roads and assist city planning."
Competition and Recognition
The hackathon had projects on themes such as Urban Planning, IndiaStack-based Innovation, Health and Inclusivity, Education, Agriculture, and Sustainable AI.
Null Pointers took the first position in software, and the top spot in hardware went to Bugs.
Smart pothole avoidance system was showcased as one of the highlight projects of the event.
Support and Encouragement
Dr. KC Ramamurthy, the Chairman of the CMR Group of Institutions and the former Rajya Sabha MP, reiterated the significance of innovation for the welfare of society and promised continued support to promising projects in the form of funding, technical support, and guidance.
Dignitaries present at the event were Dr. Sanjay Jain (Principal, CMRIT), Dr. B Narasimha Murthy (Vice Principal), Dr. Sharmila KP (Coordinator), and other academic dignitaries.
