In Chitungwiza, just outside Zimbabwe’s capital, something unusual is happening. Before sunrise, people gather in a local tavern—not for drinks, but for yoga. The Socialite Bar, usually a place for music and beer, has turned into a space where residents can find a bit of peace and support during tough times.
Here’s what stands out about this project:
A Different Kind of Yoga Studio: There are no mats or fancy gear. The group practices on the tavern’s bare floor. For many, this is their first time trying yoga.
Open to Everyone: The classes are free and open to all, especially those who wouldn’t normally have access to mental health support or wellness activities.
Led by a Local: Actions Winya, who grew up in the area, started the sessions after seeing how much people were struggling with stress, anxiety, and the pressures of daily life.
Real Impact: People who attend say they feel calmer and more hopeful. One man shared that he’s sleeping better and worrying less. Another participant, a young woman, says the sessions helped her find the confidence to start her own small business.
Changing Attitudes: Yoga isn’t common in Zimbabwe, and it’s even more unusual for men to talk openly about mental health. This group is helping break down those barriers.
A Small Step, But Important: Zimbabwe has few mental health resources, and many people face poverty, unemployment, and other challenges. These yoga sessions are a simple but meaningful way for people to support each other.
It’s not a perfect solution, but for those who show up before dawn in that tavern, it’s a start.
