At the heart of India Maritime Week 2025, held at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, V.O. Chidambaranar Port (VOC Port) emerged as a trailblazer in sustainable port development. During Green Maritime Day, the port unveiled a series of green initiatives aimed at transforming Tuticorin into a renewable energy and smart logistics hub.

Organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) in collaboration with RMI and NCOEGPS, the event highlighted India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions in the maritime sector by 2047. Union Ministers Sarbananda Sonowal and Bhupender Yadav lauded VOC Port’s efforts, calling it a model for other Indian ports.

•⁠ ⁠Green Hydrogen Hub: VOC Port is set to become a green hydrogen production center by 2028–2029, supporting clean fuel adoption across maritime operations.

•⁠ ⁠Solar Power Expansion: The port currently operates a 6 MW solar plant, with an additional 1 MW project nearing completion, contributing to energy self-reliance.

•⁠ ⁠Green Ammonia MoU: A ₹15,000 crore agreement was signed with Acme Green Hydrogen and Chemicals Pvt Ltd to establish a green ammonia facility, boosting sustainable cargo handling.

•⁠ ⁠Smart Port Technologies: VOC Port is integrating energy-efficient systems, digital sensors, and AI-driven logistics to reduce emissions and improve operational efficiency.

•⁠ ⁠Wind Energy Potential: Tuticorin’s coastal location offers high wind energy viability, further supporting renewable energy goals.
