Elko, Nevada, is a bird-watcher's nirvana with a dream of landing some of North America's rarest bird callers. Although current sightings indicate little notable rare spottings within Elko city proper, the region's varied landscapes-from mountain lakes to great marshes-thus create an oasis for unconventional species. The Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, only 65 miles south, is one of the most remote birding sites in the continental US, with over 225 species present year-round, including migrant rarities and high-flying birds like the Himalayan snowcock and Golden Eagle. Seasonal wetlands and forested slopes draw casual observers as well as dedicated "rarity chasers," since spring migration inundates the area with surprise sightings. For those adventurous enough to venture off the main road, Elko's wild places still hold the promise of rare birds being found in very rare locations.
