Public Outrage Erupts as MESCOM Proposes Steep Power Tariff Hike

Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) faces fierce opposition to its proposed power tariff hike of 70 paise per unit for 2025-26. During recent public hearings, consumers, industry representatives, and civic activists vehemently rejected the increase, citing concerns over revenue deficits and operational costs. MESCOM argues the hike is necessary to cover expenses and pension commitments. However, critics suggest recovering pending government subsidies could negate the need for a tariff increase. The Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) is now under pressure to reject the proposal as public sentiment strongly favors maintaining current rates.
