Revving Up Dialogue: IAMAI Pushes for Industry Consultation Amid Karnataka's Bike Taxi Ban

The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has called on the Karnataka government to engage in meaningful consultation with industry stakeholders following the state's decision to ban bike taxi services. Representing major platforms like Ola, Uber, Rapido, Zomato, and Swiggy, IAMAI has also requested a two-month extension for submitting vehicle fleet details, as mandated by the Karnataka High Court.

 

The court's recent order directed the suspension of bike taxi operations by mid-May, citing the absence of a regulatory framework under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. IAMAI has emphasized the critical role bike taxis play in urban transportation, offering cost-effective commuting options and supporting the livelihoods of gig workers. The association highlighted that lakhs of rides are booked daily in Bengaluru alone, underscoring the service's importance in easing traffic congestion and providing affordable mobility.

 

IAMAI has proposed the formation of a joint committee comprising transport department officials, industry representatives, and gig worker unions to draft balanced and inclusive guidelines. Additionally, the association has urged the government to issue temporary permits to aggregators complying with safety norms, allowing operations to continue while the policy is finalized.

 

This development has sparked a broader conversation about the future of bike taxis in Karnataka and their potential to transform urban mobility. The government's response to IAMAI's appeal will likely shape the trajectory of this essential service in the state.
