SEBI and Ministry of Panchayati Raj Launch Ambitious Financial Literacy Drive to Empower Rural India

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), in collaboration with the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, has initiated a comprehensive financial literacy program aimed at equipping gram panchayat leaders with essential financial knowledge to foster responsible investments and informed decision-making across rural India.

In a landmark initiative to bridge the financial knowledge gap in rural India, SEBI and the Ministry of Panchayati Raj have jointly launched a financial literacy scheme targeting elected representatives of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs). The scheme aims to empower sarpanches and officials at village, block, and district levels with practical knowledge on financial planning, investments in equities and mutual funds, budgeting, savings, and protection against fraudulent schemes.

Currently active in six states including Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Jammu & Kashmir, and Tripura, the program aims to reach the entire country through a network of over 3,800 master trainers. These trainers will conduct workshops and training sessions at block and district levels, enabling PRIs to become credible sources of financial guidance in their communities.

This initiative recognizes PRIs as the first point of contact for financial queries in rural areas and seeks to increase securities market participation by creating geographically inclusive investment awareness. It complements the rise in dematerialized and mutual fund accounts, extending benefits beyond urban areas.

Supported by the National Institute of Securities Market and the National Centre for Financial Education, the program marks a pivotal step towards inclusive financial growth in India.
