Watts Up, Singapore? Renewables Hit a Record High

Singapore has registered a milestone on its clean energy journey, with record high renewable energy consumption in May 2025. This was fueled by a two-pronged effort—historic domestic solar output and a steady rise in regional imports of electricity.

Renewables currently contribute 2.58% of the energy mix in Singapore, with the record high.

House solar output grew at its fastest pace since March 2024.

Renewable imports rose for the third consecutive month, reaching a two-year high.

Regional Grid Expands

Singapore also received 122.7 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy from Malaysia via the Lao PDR-Thailand-Malaysia-Singapore (LTMS) electricity trading link.

This represented 0.52% generation for the January to May months of 2025.

There were no imports a year ago in the same period, and the sudden hike is highlighted.

Strategic Significance

With 95% of its energy still gas-powered, Singapore is counting on intra-regional trade to realize its 2050 carbon-neutrality goal.

The Energy Market Authority doubled the trade capacity of the LTMS to 200 MW, with the yet-to-be-negotiated imports from Laos of hydroelectric power.

Prospects

While demand for data centres grows, Singapore's move toward solar and trans-boundary green energy is not just timely—it's indispensable.
