Wisdom Preserved: Gyan Bharatam Mission Invites Citizens To Safeguard Heritage

The Centre has rolled out the Gyan Bharatam Mission (GBM), a nationwide program under the Ministry of Culture, to conserve India’s manuscript heritage. Citizens, institutions, and custodians are encouraged to contribute rare manuscripts for cataloguing and digitization, ensuring their preservation for future generations.

Mission Objectives

GBM focuses on five verticals: survey and cataloguing, conservation and capacity building, technology and digitisation, linguistics and translation, and research, publication, and outreach. The mission aims to integrate manuscripts into a National Digital Repository, offering controlled access for scholars and the public.

Public Participation

Individuals and institutions holding manuscripts—whether palm-leaf, copper plate, paper, or textile—can register them on the Gyan Bharatam portal. Over 40 lakh manuscripts have already been logged, with contributions from more than 600 custodians nationwide.

Regional Efforts

States like Telangana and Haryana have accelerated surveys and digitisation drives, highlighting the mission’s pan-India scope. Local archives and research institutes are working closely with the Centre to meet the June 2026 deadline.

Cultural Significance

By preserving manuscripts spanning centuries and languages, GBM strengthens India’s civilisational memory and supports the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. The initiative also promotes translation and publication, making ancient wisdom accessible to modern audiences.
