Astronaut or Astro-not? Kate Mara’s Sci-Fi Flick Falls Flat

Although it has a promising concept, The Astronaut, starring Kate Mara, has received mixed reviews since its premiere at SXSW 2025. The film, directed by Jess Varley, is about the life of astronaut Sam Walker, who returns from space with some unsettling events that suggest she may not be alone. Mara does a great job in her role, but critics have panned the film for its slow pace, clichéd storyline, and predictable plot twists.

The film's attempt to blend sci-fi with psychological thriller elements does not assist it in transcending genre conventions. The Astronaut, despite its promising concept, fails to captivate audiences and leaves its viewers underwhelmed by the time it gets to its climax.
