India’s IT and tech sector is at the heart of a heated work-life balance debate, with companies like Infosys, Genpact, and TCS rolling out controversial policies that are reshaping employee expectations. From tracking remote work hours to performance-linked layoffs and mandatory learning hours, the industry is grappling with how to balance productivity with well-being.

Infosys has introduced a system that sends warning emails to employees exceeding the 9.15-hour daily limit, while Genpact faced backlash over alleged 10-hour workdays and incentives for overtime. TCS, meanwhile, now mandates 225 billable days per year and daily learning hours, drawing criticism from employee unions.

The debate is further fueled by contrasting leadership views—Narayana Murthy and L&T’s SN Subrahmanyan advocate 70–90 hour workweeks, while Capgemini’s Ashwin Yardi and SAP Labs’ Sindhu Gangadharan push for outcome-based work and weekend boundaries.

With 52% of employees reporting burnout and India ranking among the world’s most overworked nations, the conversation is shifting from hustle to health.
