As part of the World Environment Day campaign, the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) conducted a robust street play at the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Interstate Bus Terminal to raise awareness among the public about the dangers of plastic pollution. By staging drama and narration, performers highlighted the catastrophic impacts of single-use plastics on the environment, water bodies, and wildlife, urging the public to switch over to safe alternatives like cloth and jute bags, and reusable containers.
The interactive play drew spectators, making the issue of plastic pollution both intimate and urgent. Officials for PPCB explained, "Street plays are a highly effective medium to reach people at a direct level, especially in public spaces. We want citizens to know that their everyday choices affect a lot," reflecting the popularity of the play in terms of consumer accountability.
To evoke impromptu action, the spectators were given cloth bags to promote proactive steps towards reducing plastic usage. Some onlookers expressed their willingness to change habits after the play.
This campaign is part of a series of activities leading to June 5, World Environment Day, with others taking place across the region to encourage sustainable living and shared responsibility. The creative style of the campaign demonstrates the potential for people power to bring about environmental change.
