India and Japan have decided to greatly boost defence and naval cooperation following high-level negotiations here on Monday. Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh had a meeting with his Japanese counterpart, Gen Nakatani, during which both nations committed to increase bilateral military exercises and boost industry cooperation, especially in advanced areas like automation, artificial intelligence, cyber, and space.
One of the most significant decisions made during the meeting was to initiate negotiations for establishing a senior officer-level dialogue mechanism to enable mutual working between the two nations' armed forces. The action aims to add new dimensions to the already robust maritime cooperation and reflects the increasing strategic relationship between India and Japan, especially as the two nations are confronted with rising security challenges in the Indo-Pacific region.
The ministers also talked about their global and special strategic partnership's security and defense pillars, affirming their commitments to regional stability and peace. The talks come as Japan and India, members of the Quad alliance as well as the United States and Australia, seek to counter the increasing military presence of China in the region.
Also, the talks involved possible collaboration on cutting-edge defense technologies and joint involvement in such projects as the Global Combat Air Program, with the goal of creating a next-generation fighter jet by 2035.
The summit highlighted the significance of India-Japan defense ties and paved the way for increased cooperation in defense production, technology transfer, and bilateral military exercises to secure sea lanes and counter new security challenges.
