India is entering a new age of food transparency with revolutionary regulations mandating clear, front-of-pack nutrition labeling on all packaged foods. Under a Supreme Court order, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) must release these rules by July 2025, forcing companies to put front and center key information-sugar, salt, and saturated fat content, and their percentage of recommended daily intake (RDA)-in large, bold lettering. The move is aimed at helping consumers quickly spot unhealthy ingredients and choose better, more informed options, especially as ultra-processed foods become more trendy and non-communicable diseases are on the rise. The new system will also introduce a star-based Indian Nutrition Rating for easy comparison, and milk foods will carry a special logo. Consumer organizations and health experts welcomed the change as a major move towards empowering India's consumers. Source: Business Today, Foodsafetyworks
