India has taken a major leap in semiconductor innovation with the inauguration of Renesas Electronics’ new design centres in Noida and Bengaluru. These facilities mark the country’s first foray into 3-nanometer chip design, placing India alongside global leaders in advanced semiconductor technology.
Advancing India’s Semiconductor Capabilities
- The new centres will focus on developing high-performance and energy-efficient 3nm chips, a significant upgrade from previous 7nm and 5nm designs
- The initiative aligns with India’s broader strategy to build a comprehensive semiconductor ecosystem, covering design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and supply chain development
- Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw described the 3nm design effort as a defining moment for India’s semiconductor ambitions
Strengthening Industry and Talent Development
- Renesas has partnered with the Ministry of Electronics and IT to support local startups and academic institutions through the Chips to Startup program
- More than 270 engineering institutions will receive semiconductor learning kits to enhance hands-on hardware skills and foster innovation
- The Noida and Bengaluru centres will house R&D teams working on embedded systems, software, and product development, reinforcing India’s role in global semiconductor research
India’s semiconductor industry has rapidly evolved from a nascent stage to an emerging global hub, driven by rising demand across smartphones, laptops, automobiles, medical devices, and defense applications. The launch of 3nm chip design centres signals India’s growing influence in the global semiconductor supply chain.
