Chandigarh has emerged as India’s biggest alcohol consumer, recording per capita liquor consumption nearly six times the national average. With over 23 lakh cases sold in 2024–25, the Union Territory’s per capita intake stands at 1.84 cases annually, far surpassing the country’s average and raising social and economic concerns.
Recent data reveals that Chandigarh leads India in per capita alcohol consumption, outpacing all states and Union Territories. The UT sold 23,02,291 liquor cases in 2024–25, including IMFL, IFL, and country liquor. This translates to approximately 1.84 cases per resident per year, more than 6.5 times the national IMFL average.
Experts attribute this trend to Chandigarh’s unique demographics, high disposable incomes, and easy availability of alcohol. The city’s nightlife culture and proximity to Punjab and Haryana also contribute to higher consumption levels. While the figures highlight strong demand, they also raise concerns about public health, regulation, and the need for awareness campaigns.
The data underscores India’s growing alcohol market, which sold over 40 crore IMFL cases nationwide in 2024–25, marking a steady increase. Chandigarh’s consumption patterns stand out as an extreme example of how lifestyle and accessibility can drive per capita averages far beyond national norms.
