India has successfully conducted a mock satellite dogfight using its SPADEX mission, marking a significant milestone in space technology. The Indian Space Research Organisation initiated the manoeuvre between two satellites, SDX 01 and SDX 02, orbiting approximately 500 kilometers above Earth. This complex operation, resembling aerial dogfights between fighter jets, demonstrates India's growing expertise in autonomous space operations.

The dogfight was made possible due to precise fuel management during the SPADEX mission. ISRO observed that both satellites retained nearly 50 percent of their fuel after completing docking and undocking experiments. Utilizing this surplus, the agency executed a series of close-range orbital manoeuvres, pushing the boundaries of satellite coordination and control.

Strategic Significance

- The manoeuvre involved a chaser satellite engaging with a target satellite in controlled proximity operations
- ISRO’s success follows similar exercises conducted by China, highlighting India’s advancements in space technology
- Experts view this as a step toward future autonomous satellite operations, including space-based defense applications

Technical Achievements

- The satellites, traveling at 28,800 kilometers per hour, executed precise flight patterns under ISRO’s guidance
- The mission builds on previous docking experiments, reinforcing India’s capability in satellite rendezvous and orbital management
- ISRO Chairman Dr. V Narayanan emphasized that the mission showcases India’s ability to conduct complex space operations with indigenous technology

Global Context

The development comes amid growing concerns over space militarization, with the US Space Force recently warning about China’s evolving satellite capabilities. While ISRO’s mission remains focused on peaceful technological advancements, experts acknowledge its strategic implications in the global space race.
