Nearly 40,000 people gathered in Tokyo to commemorate Japan's Constitution Memorial Day, advocating for the preservation of the country's pacifist constitution and opposing military expansion. The rally, held in a central park, featured speeches from lawmakers, scholars, and citizens, all emphasizing the importance of Article 9, which renounces war and prohibits Japan from maintaining armed forces.
Participants carried banners with messages such as "Oppose arms expansion" and "Love the Constitution and safeguard world peace," reflecting widespread concerns over recent government actions. In recent years, Japan has lifted the ban on collective self-defense and revised key security policies, prompting fears of increased military involvement.
Political leaders from opposition parties urged the government to refrain from proposing constitutional amendments that could alter Japan's longstanding commitment to peace. Tomoko Tamura, head of the Japanese Communist Party, criticized the government's defense policies, arguing that they integrate Japan's Self-Defense Forces into the U.S. military command system. She called for diplomatic efforts to promote stability in East Asia.
Experts at the rally echoed these sentiments, stressing that Japan should prioritize social welfare, education, and economic development over military expansion. University of Tokyo professor Manabu Sato questioned the rising defense budget, stating that Article 9 has ensured decades of peace and stability.
The event attracted a diverse crowd, including young people and families. A mother attending with her children expressed her hope that future generations would grow up in a world free from the threat of war.
