India imposed immediate port restrictions on some Bangladeshi imports like readymade garments, processed food items, plastics, and wooden furniture in a move that is widely seen as a retaliatory measure following recent Bangladeshi trade restrictions and diplomatic strain. Bangladeshi garments can only come into India through Nhava Sheva and Kolkata sea ports now, with all land ports being closed for the purpose. Fruit-flavored drinks, cotton waste, and sweets are also barred from entering through land customs offices and integrated check posts in Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, and West Bengal border locations.

These restrictions do not apply to Bangladeshi imports transiting India to Nepal and Bhutan. The move comes after Bangladesh banned the export of Indian yarn and sharpened its vigilance on Indian exports, escalating trade and diplomatic tensions between the two neighbours
