Motorola has staged an incredible turnaround in 2024, breaking earlier records in terms of smartphone shipments and financial growth. The return to form has been driven by a keen emphasis on affordability, diversification in premium products, and strategic investment in major worldwide markets.

Key Highlights

Motorola global smartphone shipments reached an all-time record in 2024 and accelerated by a year-over-year rate of 23% across the board, ahead of the total market. Motorola's value-priced and broad product lineup struck particularly well in Latin America, North America, and India, and India was the breakout market with triple-digit growth, which accelerated quickly.

Lenovo-Motorola shipped 15.3 million smartphones in Q4 2024 alone, a 15% year-over-year growth and grabbing 5% of the world's market share. The company's revenue for the quarter grew 21% due to increased average selling prices and robust demand for high-end models such as the Edge and Razr series. The discontinuation of the budget E series from the sales lineup and increased focus on devices with 5G capabilities also helped in this growth.

Financially, Motorola Solutions had record-breaking 2024 results. Full-year sales of $10.8 billion were 8% higher than in 2023, and operating earnings increased 17% to $2.7 billion. The company generated a record operating cash flow of $2.4 billion, up 17% from the prior year. Non-GAAP earnings per share increased 16% to $13.84, and the company had a record backlog of $14.7 billion at the end of the year, setting the stage for future growth.

Highlighting victories in the business market were significant service contract renewals and orders of technology across Australia, Norway, Brazil, and the UK, solidifying Motorola's international presence.

The organization also revealed a strategic acquisition of Theatro, a provider of AI and voice-activated communication software, reflecting ongoing investment in digital transformation and innovation for frontline workers.

Motorola's 2024 performance is an impressive turnaround, fueled by its speed in responding to the market needs, investing in high-growth markets, and delivering value in both consumer and enterprise segments. With tailwinds in hand and a strong product pipeline, Motorola is set for yet another solid year to come.
