A sweeping new poll finds that climate change is no longer a future specter for India—it's a daily reality.
71% of Indians have lived through intense heat waves over the past year, and more than half have experienced agricultural pests, power cuts, water contamination, droughts, and extreme air pollution.
Extreme weather conditions—like tornado-like monsoons and floods—are turning lives and livelihoods inside out across the country, with the majority experiencing at least one such event in the last 12 months.
Public health anxiety is increasing: More than half of those polled are "very concerned" about food emergencies, species extinction, droughts, and heatwaves.
The link to climate change is natural in the popular imagination: Most Indians see global warming as the cause of these disasters, 64% linking it with species extinction and over 60% with heat waves and crop failure.
Yet there is still a knowledge gap—32% of Indians have never heard of global warming, highlighting the need for climate education and communication.
The message is unmistakable: Climate danger is personal and near to millions, and adaptation and carbon lowering are more necessary than ever.
