National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and his deputy, Alex Wong, will be leaving their jobs in the Trump White House, sources close to the matter confirm. The departure follows weeks of controversy after Waltz inadvertently added a journalist to a Signal group chat where senior officials were hatching plans for U.S. military action against Houthi rebels in Yemen.
The affair, labeled "Signalgate," was revealed in March when The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg wrote a report based on the chat, raising fears that sensitive information had been leaked. While President Trump initially came to the defense of Waltz, describing him as "a good man" who had "learned a lesson," the pressure increased as more details were revealed and lawmakers questioned the management of classified information.
Waltz, who was once a congressman representing Florida, acknowledged responsibility for the mistake but failed to resign during the time. Former deputy special representative for North Korea, Deputy Alex Wong, is also resigning. White House has declined to comment on the individuals set to replace Waltz and Wong.
