Starting May 16, Zomato will charge its Gold members the rain surge fee during rainy days, ending the previous advantage of a waiver. The fee, typically between ₹15 and ₹35, will be programmed to pay more to delivery partners who have to operate in challenging rainy conditions. While Gold members will still receive benefits like free delivery within 7 km and restaurant discounts, removal of the rain fee exemption reduces the overall value of the membership, especially during monsoon months when surge prices are typical.
Zomato made the transition quietly through in-app alert, citing profitability and payouts to partners during a food delivery slowdown. Competitor Swiggy also levies surge charges in rain for subscribers, suggesting the practice may become standard industry practice. The change has received negative sentiment from users, with some calling into question transparency regarding how the fees benefit delivery personnel.
