In a first-of-its-kind step, the Delhi Assembly Speaker today conducted the disbursement of Ayushman Bharat cards to senior citizens, a landmark step in the city's roll-out of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). The programme, under observation by MLAs and local government officials, aims to cover all the citizens above the age of 70-years-old, regardless of income, with health insurance of up to ₹5 lakh for a family on an annual basis. The Speaker of the Assembly mentioned the government's commitment towards making medical care accessible, as mobile vans and local MLAs registered and distributed cards for maximum coverage. This project is also a part of a grand effort to establish 1,139 Arogya Mandirs in Delhi that will take health services beyond traditional clinics. More than 6.5 lakh families will gain from the scheme, providing an overdue security net for the aging population of the capital.
