"Lag Ja Gale," the haunting melody that has captivated generations, nearly didn’t make it into the 1964 film Woh Kaun Thi. Director Raj Khosla initially dismissed the song, believing it wouldn’t fit the film’s mood. It was only after composer Madan Mohan sought the intervention of actor Manoj Kumar that the song was saved from rejection.

Mohan, convinced of the song’s brilliance, reached out to Kumar, urging him to persuade Khosla. Initially hesitant, Kumar finally agreed after hearing the composition. He was stunned that Khosla, known for his deep appreciation of music, had overlooked its beauty.

After persistent urging, Khosla reluctantly agreed to listen to the song again. The moment he did, he realized his mistake—so much so that he jokingly picked up his own shoe to hit himself in disbelief. The song went on to become one of Lata Mangeshkar’s most cherished performances, celebrated for its intricate vocal flourishes and emotional depth.

Decades later, "Lag Ja Gale" remains a timeless classic, repurposed in films like Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Bombay Talkies, proving that some melodies are simply meant to endure.
