Indian security officials and cyber security experts have increased real-time surveillance of cyberspace after shocking allegations on social media site X of unauthorized entry into sensitive military portals. It follows increased Indo-Pak tensions in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam terror attack.
On Monday, officials confirmed that a handle on X, 'Pakistan Cyber Force', claimed to have hacked critical Indian defence websites, including the Military Engineering Service and the Manohar Parrikar Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis. The hackers reportedly accessed sensitive information, which could have compromised personal details and login credentials of defence personnel.
In a related incident, the website of Armoured Vehicle Nigam Limited (AVNL), a public sector undertaking of the Ministry of Defence, was hacked and the Pakistan flag and images of the Al Khalid tank uploaded. Authorities responded by closing the AVNL website for a detailed audit to assess the extent of the breach and preserve the integrity of the site.
Security authorities indicated that ongoing surveillance is intended to quickly identify and prevent further cyber attacks, in particular, those that are suspected of being coordinated with Pakistan-based culprits. Initiatives are being taken to bolster cyber defense and boost the robustness of key online infrastructure.
Authorities confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored and all precautions have been taken to secure defence networks from any further cyber attacks.
