Acclaimed filmmaker Mark Cousins delivered a thought-provoking “anti-masterclass” on documentary filmmaking and creativity yesterday at the Millennium Docs Against Gravity festival in Warsaw, Poland. The session, held at the National Museum of Ethnography, was designed to subvert the traditional masterclass format, inviting attendees to embrace spontaneity, vulnerability, and playfulness in their creative processes.
During the 75-minute event, Cousins engaged the audience with unscripted reflections on photography and documentary storytelling, responding in real time to a series of images presented by the festival’s artistic director, Karol Piekarczyk. “I genuinely have no idea what’s going to appear on the screen,” Cousins said, emphasizing the value of improvisation and immediate reaction as sources of creative inspiration.
The session explored themes central to Cousins’ work, such as the power of the image, the gaze of the subject, and the hidden narratives behind everyday moments. One notable exchange centered on a photograph of a woman in a New York City subway, prompting Cousins to reflect on the dynamic between filmmaker, subject, and viewer. He also drew from his own recent experiences in Poland, using a photograph he took in Gdansk as a springboard for audience discussion about storytelling possibilities and the ethics of documentary engagement.
Cousins’ approach challenged attendees to reconsider the boundaries of documentary filmmaking, suggesting that creativity often emerges from uncertainty and the willingness to see the world differently. “Perhaps that’s where the creativity begins, and we can explore what it’s like to be 76 or what it’s like to reside in a city like this,” he mused, referencing the serendipity of everyday encounters.
The “anti-masterclass” is part of a broader retrospective of Cousins’ work at the festival, which also features the Polish premiere of his latest film, "A Sudden Glimpse to Deeper Things," about Scottish artist Wilhelmina Barns-Graham. The event underscores Millennium Docs Against Gravity’s commitment to innovation and dialogue within the documentary field, as it celebrates its 22nd edition with a diverse program of films, discussions, and industry events.
