Dr A Velumani, the visionary entrepreneur behind Thyrocare, is now a household name in India's healthcare industry-not only for creating a Rs 5,000 crore diagnostic empire from scratch, but also for his frank observations on life, leadership, and people. In a recent social media post, Velumani revealed a personal philosophy that has struck a chord: he is drawn to optimists and keeps chronic complainers at arm's length.

Key Highlights

Humble Beginnings, Massive Impact
Born in a small village on the outskirts of Coimbatore to a landless farmer, Velumani grew up in adversity. His mother sold buffalo milk to survive. All this notwithstanding, he did a PhD in Thyroid Biochemistry while working at BARC and went on to start Thyrocare-a business that would go on to revolutionize affordable diagnostics in India.

Bootstrapped Success
Velumani’s journey is a rare example in India’s startup ecosystem. He built Thyrocare without loans or external investors, relying on disciplined reinvestment and a long-term vision. By 2021, he owned over 66% of the company, which he sold to PharmEasy for a staggering Rs 4,546 crore. This deal was historic, as it marked one of the first times a startup acquired a listed company in India.

The People Principle
Velumani's more recent musing is on the emotional range of individuals he meets. He notices two ends: those who are not emotional at all and those who are extremely emotional. Of the emotional ones, he likes optimists-individuals who exude joy, are thankful, and encourage others. He confesses that he likes to be around them. To the perpetual complainers who complain, blame, and bring people down, he only says, I wish to runaway fast.

Life After Thyrocare
Once he sold his share, Velumani remains an inspiration as an investor and mentor. He promotes resilience, smart money habits, and emotional intelligence. His message to young entrepreneurs is to listen to all, but ultimately do your own thing.

A Beacon for Aspiring Entrepreneurs
Velumani's tale is one of perseverance, fast decision-making, and innovation. Having begun with Rs 500 to being given a single cheque for Rs 5,000 crore, his story is one to show that success is not as much about where you begin as it is about your mindset and determination.
