Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has promised that the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will be formally established by September 15, 2025, marking the end of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) rule. The new authority aims to transform city governance, with a promise to usher in more efficiency, transparency, and improved civic services for Bengaluru's rapidly growing population.
GBA will divide the existing BBMP into multiple corporations with their respective commissioners under the charge of a chief commissioner. Reorganisation is intended to bring solutions to age-old urban maladies such as traffic, waterlogging, sanitation, and infrastructure deficiency. State government has already notified to convert BBMP into GBA and is inviting suggestions from MLAs on how many and what shape the new corporations should be.
In addition to the administrative reforms, the government also made declarations such as phasing out street vendors from the pavement, supplying push carts to registered vendors, and widening road plans. The geography of GBA is expected to expand to nearly 1,400 sq km, encompassing all key civic agencies for overall planning and service delivery.
