Delhi is poised for a big leap towards sustainable public transport with the arrival of 500 new electric buses on its roads in the next two months. The news comes after Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh announced this after a high-level review meeting of the city's e-bus rollout.

Major points:

The first batch of 500 electric buses will be operational in the next two months, with an additional 1,000 e-buses planned by the end of this year. This move is part of Delhi’s broader vision to become the electric vehicle capital of India and to provide cleaner, more efficient commuting options for residents.

The new e-buses, or DEVI buses, are meant for running on shorter routes of approximately 12 km, particularly where bigger buses are operationally challenged. This will enhance last-mile connectivity and provide eco-friendly transport on an affordable basis throughout the city.

A planned route rationalisation scheme is being executed to smoothly integrate such e-buses in the existing public transport system of Delhi. Priorities are being concentrated on achieving maximum coverage and efficiency with a view to serving specific local requirements.

The launch is backed by prominent bus manufacturers and concessionaires like PMI Electro Mobility, Switch Mobility, and JBM. Civil works and charging facilities at major bus depots are under way to enable efficient deployment and operation of the new fleet.

Minister Singh has appealed to all concerned to expedite the delivery of buses and the establishment of EV charging infrastructure, stressing the need to make clean mobility available and mitigate urban pollution.

Public campaigns are also scheduled to enlighten citizens on the advantages of the new DEVI e-buses and popularize widespread use of this green mode of transport.

This program represents a crucial milestone in the path of Delhi towards a cleaner, wiser future, not only delivering environmental dividends but also an improved and more dependable commuting experience for everyone.
