Reliance Jio has achieved a massive global benchmark, becoming the world's third fastest telecommunication operator in terms of download speed, according to Opensignal's latest report. Jio recorded an average download speed of 97 Mbps in the months of July to December 2024, ranking second only behind T-Mobile USA (152.5 Mbps) and Telenor Norway (127 Mbps). The significance here is that Jio is the only Indian telco featured in this top-notch list, a testament to its rapid 5G growth and ability to deliver high-speed data at low prices.
Jio's 5G bundling model of providing free access with daily data plans has enabled tens of millions of Indians to enjoy world-class connectivity at non-premium prices. Not only has this supported average speeds, but it has also driven humongous adoption, with Jio boasting the largest 5G network presence as well as traffic. Airtel was bestowed the title of "Global Rising Star" for its impressive year-over-year speed increase, though did not make the top three.
Jio's achievement places India squarely on the global telecom map and emphasizes the revolutionary potential of ubiquitous, low-cost 5G.
