When Suman Chakraborty took over as director at IIT Kharagpur, he made it clear that academic excellence isn’t the only thing that matters on campus. In his view, students also need empathy, support, and real human connection to truly thrive.

Here’s what he’s focusing on:

Chakraborty believes that faculty and students need to connect beyond just lectures and exams. He thinks that building trust and understanding can help spot problems early and make students feel more comfortable reaching out for help.

He’s not a fan of strict attendance rules that feel like punishment, but he also doesn’t think total freedom is the answer. Instead, he wants a balanced approach that encourages responsibility without adding pressure.

While technology like chatbots can offer quick support, Chakraborty says nothing can replace genuine human warmth—what he calls “motherly affection and empathy”—especially for students who are struggling.

He’s also trying to break the stigma around mental health on campus. By encouraging open conversations and support, he hopes students will feel less alone and more willing to seek help.

IIT Kharagpur has already started some new programs, like mindfulness lounges, peer mentoring, and “Life Under Canopy,” which uses nature to help students de-stress.

The campus Counseling Centre is available for therapy, group discussions, and even emergency help around the clock. Peer mentors are trained to notice when someone might need extra support.

Chakraborty’s message is simple: academic success is important, but so is kindness and community. He wants IIT Kharagpur to be a place where students feel cared for, not just graded.
