In a historical first for Indian academics, the City University of New York (CUNY) recently launched the 'Achyuta Samanta India Initiative CUNY Crest Institute' (ASIICCI), the first American research institute named after an Indian. The institute, inaugurated in a function graced by leading academics and officials, acknowledges Dr. Achyuta Samanta—founding father of KIIT and KISS—for his paradigm-shifting work in education and tribal welfare.
The ASIICCI will sponsor American students to study Odisha's rich heritage, art, and Dr. Samanta's education innovations. President of Bronx Community College Dr. Milton Santiago was motivated to take up the mission after a visit to KIIT and KISS in Bhubaneswar. The plan was unanimously passed by the CUNY board for awarding Dr. Samanta international recognition.
On the occasion, Dr. Samanta dedicated the award to Odisha people and the KIIT-KISS family, along with accepting CUNY's highest honor—the Presidential Medal. The organization is aimed at disseminating cross-cultural knowledge and research on India's tribal society and social development.
