EcoKaari, a Pune-based social enterprise, is redefining sustainability by transforming discarded plastic into handcrafted fabrics. Founded by Nandan Bhat, the initiative not only tackles environmental waste but also empowers underprivileged communities by providing them with stable employment and skill development opportunities.
Impact and Process:
- EcoKaari upcycles soft plastic waste such as wrappers, bags, and packaging, which are often ignored by waste collectors due to their lack of commercial value.
- The collected plastic is washed, sanitized, dried, and sorted by color before being cut into strips and spun on a charkha. These strips are then woven into fabric using traditional handlooms.
- The organization collaborates with SWaCH, a non-profit working with waste pickers, to source raw materials while also training artisans in weaving techniques.
- The final products include bags, accessories, and home décor items, offering a sustainable alternative to conventional textiles.
- The initiative not only reduces plastic pollution but also revives traditional handloom practices, creating meaningful employment for marginalized communities.
Bhat’s journey from corporate life to social entrepreneurship was inspired by his treks through the Sahyadri mountains, where he witnessed the devastating impact of plastic waste on the environment. His vision for EcoKaari is to create a circular economy where waste is repurposed into valuable products while supporting artisans and waste collectors.
