The United States has approved a $310 million training and sustainment package for Ukraine’s F-16 fighter jets, marking a significant step in strengthening Kyiv’s air defense capabilities. The Pentagon announced the decision on May 3, confirming that the package includes aircraft upgrades, pilot training, maintenance support, spare parts, and ground handling equipment.
The approval comes as Ukraine prepares to integrate F-16 jets into its air force, with deliveries expected from European allies including the Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, and Belgium. The training program aims to enhance Ukraine’s ability to operate and maintain the aircraft effectively, ensuring interoperability with NATO forces.
The Defense Security Cooperation Agency emphasized that the package aligns with US foreign policy objectives, reinforcing Ukraine’s defense against ongoing threats. Officials noted that the training will take place at the European F-16 Training Center in Romania, where Ukrainian pilots are undergoing intensive instruction.
In addition to the training package, the US has been sending retired F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine for spare parts, further supporting the country’s air force modernization efforts. The move underscores Washington’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s military readiness amid continued conflict.
