The legendary Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani Express, the pride and symbol of the speed and sophistication of Indian Railways, clocked 53 years of service on May 17, 2025. Western Railway invited rail enthusiasts and regular commuters to join in celebrating the milestone at Mumbai Central station to mark the revered train's long-lasting legacy.
Key Highlights:
Historic Landmark: On May 17, 1972, the Mumbai-Delhi Rajdhani took to rails as India's second Rajdhani Express after Howrah Rajdhani. It soon established standards for speed, comfort, and timeliness and turned into a day-to-day lifeline connecting Mumbai and the capital.
Evolution of Excellence: It was initially a weekly service, but with its huge popularity, it started running more frequently and was upgraded with coaches. From its inaugural run with retro-fitted WDM2 diesel locos and a few air-conditioned coaches, it now features contemporary Tejas rakes, world-class interiors, and improved amenities.
Record-Breaking Service: Traveling 1,384 km in more than 15 hours, the Mumbai Rajdhani is the fastest among 25 Rajdhani trains in India, with an average speed of almost 90 km/h and premium priority on the network.
Legacy of Luxury: With its upscale service, the train has always been the business and luxury traveler's first choice, traversing top states and millions of travelers between Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi.
Tribute to Tradition: The 53rd anniversary of the train was a tribute to the train staff, regular commuters, and the spirit that has kept the Rajdhani on the top of Indian rail travel despite new-age trains such as the Vande Bharat.
