India’s Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu has announced that the country is preparing to conduct air taxi trials at a major air show next year, marking a pivotal step toward revolutionizing urban transportation in India’s busiest cities. The move is part of a broader government push to ease urban congestion and showcase India’s growing prowess in advanced aviation technologies.

Key Highlights:

Air Taxi Trials Set for 2026: The government will launch pilot trials of indigenously developed air taxi services in metro cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Pune, with the first demonstrations expected at a high-profile air show in 2026. These trials will feature electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, designed for short urban hops and rapid city-center connections.

Regulatory Milestones: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already issued comprehensive guidelines for vertiports—the take-off and landing hubs for air taxis—covering infrastructure, safety, and operational standards. This regulatory groundwork paves the way for safe and efficient air taxi operations across India’s urban centers.

Industry Partnerships: Leading Indian and international companies are actively developing air taxi solutions. InterGlobe Enterprises (parent of IndiGo) has partnered with Archer Aviation to bring 200 electric air taxis to India, while homegrown startups like Sarla Aviation and The ePlane Company are advancing prototype development and test flights, aiming for commercial deployment by 2026.

Urban Mobility Vision: The initiative is part of the government’s larger vision to address urban congestion, expand regional connectivity, and position India as a leader in advanced air mobility. Fifty new airports are planned in the next five years, with the total number expected to exceed 200 by 2047.

Affordability and Accessibility: Air taxi fares are projected to be competitive, with estimated costs only slightly higher than premium cab rides for similar city routes, making the service accessible to a broad segment of urban commuters.

With regulatory frameworks in place and industry partnerships accelerating, India’s air taxi trials at the 2026 air show promise to usher in a new era of urban mobility and technological innovation.
